One of the major problems I see about small companies is the demand; in the case of a startup that has a lot of potential and has, in a way, managed to get a lot of pre-release clients in, the staff tend to focus on keeping things flowing smoothly throughout the first few months, oftentimes making multiple updates (like flickr) just to ensure the clients are satisfied.Charles Hoosehttp://www.c12online.com/services/itil-demand-management.html[email protected]tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3237724005744642470.post-13162021997309132752012-11-03T08:13:41.847+00:002012-11-03T08:13:41.847+00:00Jez Thanks for getting in touch with your thoughts...Jez
Thanks for getting in touch with your thoughts on my blog. I’ve had a look at your talk at http://www.thoughtworks.com/events/implementing-continuous-delivery in which you do indeed say that implementing continuous delivery is hard... several times. I guess that it’s easy to make any subject sound easy when you’re enthusiastic and passionate about it and possess a proven track record in that area.

You say that it takes about 1 to 5 years to implement CD depending upon an organization’s size and complexity and I did wonder whether those figures are based upon anecdotal evidence or the results of a study?
Roger Hugheshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07042290171112551665[email protected]tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3237724005744642470.post-21656778268335932742012-11-02T20:47:33.137+00:002012-11-02T20:47:33.137+00:00Hi Roger Thanks for the thoughtful, detailed blog...Hi Roger

Thanks for the thoughtful, detailed blog post, and for your feedback on my talk.

I am sorry if I made it seem like continuous delivery is easy. I try and make a point of saying that it is hard in all my talks, but sometimes (including during the Berlin one it seems) I forget. As you rightly point out, it is hard, especially in larger organizations.

Typically it needs to be implemented team-by-team. Getting the ops folk on board can be especially painful, and it needs dev and ops to work together (hence devops). Ops are usually more enthusiastic about helping if a) they are struggling anyway and b) the dev team agrees to be on the hook if things go wrong during deployment, or shortly afterwards (ITIL also recommends this). I talk more about implementing CD in enterprises in this talk: http://www.thoughtworks.com/events/implementing-continuous-delivery

Thanks,

Jez.Jez Humblehttp://continuousdelivery.com[email protected]
